Math . . Start Where?
A typical method used when working with adults with Math deficiencies is to test all skills to determine where to start the remedial treatment. There’s certainly no need to make students repeat areas in which they are obviously proficient…Or is there?
Does the fact that students know a particular calculation mean they understand the operation? How do we measure any gaps in their learning and comprehension?
The only true way to solve adult Math problems is to start at the beginning and systematically teach. Notice I said teach, not re-teach. This systematic teaching approach must not resemble prior Math experiences or students will be turned off. It should also be unique enough to engage even the most mathematically down-trodden adults. Some will say that they can’t afford the time to go back to the beginning. I say they can’t afford not to if they want their students to truly succeed immediately and in the future.
