5 Strategies to Help Adult Learners

Succeed in Mathematics

How can we reach students and other adults who are turned off to Mathematics? What are some basic methods that will catch and hold their interest and attention?

Here are some strategies that have worked for me:

  • Avoid “passive” teaching and learning experiences. Adults need to participate in their learning.

  • Present material that is fresh, not a rehash of their earlier Math presentations.

  • Present material that is engaging. Include meaningful real life experiences and humor.

  • Make sure that participants have opportunities to review prior lessons and have access to missed material.

  • Maintain a non-threatening atmosphere. If technology is used its use should be obvious and add to the learning experience.
